French Bulldog VS English Bulldog

They both belong to the Bulldog family, both endowed with adorable wrinkly skin and equally lovable! But did you know that despite being both Bulldogs, there are a lot of differences between a French Bulldog and an English Bulldog? Here are just some you might have never known!

When it comes to the price point, Frenchies are a bit pricier than English Bulldogs simply because the former is a smidge more popular than the latter. And in terms of lifespan, French Bulldogs live longer – and you’ll find out why in just a minute.

So, if you’re eager to bring home either one of these big-eyed, furrowed-forehead canines, this side-by-side comparison of the two breeds can help you take your pick.

11. Breed History And Origins

It may seem odd that French Bulldogs are named such when they actually hailed from England instead of France. These canines are a constant favorite of lace traders, as well as French aristocrats because of their mellow demeanor. By the 19th century, they eventually made their way to America and, soon after, the rest of the world.

On the other hand, English Bulldogs had their humble beginning as fighting dogs and bullbaiting in England. But as the sport was classified as illegal, breeders decided to mix these pups with Terriers. The result? A more agile, sweeter, lovable rogue!

10. Appearance: Height

French Bulldogs are certainly not the tallest pups out there, but they are not exactly very short, either. They can grow between 20 and 28 inches, which still makes them decent lap dogs. There are also teacup or mini versions, which are much smaller than standard-sized Frenchies.

As for English Bulldogs, these all-muscle canines are a smidge smaller than Frenchies. They are a little over a foot tall, sometimes up to 15 inches.

9. Appearance: Weight

Although French Bulldogs are taller, they are lighter than English Bulldogs. For instance, an average Frenchie can weigh about 28 lbs, which is the maximum for both females and males.

With their robust and bulky bodies, English Bulldogs are obviously heavier than French Bulldogs. They can pack an average weight of 50 lbs, thanks to their stocky physiques, heavy bones, and muscles.

8. Appearance: Ears

French Bulldogs are known for their signature bat ears. Their ears are erect, tall, and triangular in shape. This gives them an alert and eager appearance.

English Bulldogs have a uniquely different style of ears. Instead of sticking out, their ears are far apart on each side of the head. Then, they drop down almost like a rosette shape.

7. Appearance: Wrinkly Skin

While both breeds possess a fair amount of wrinkles and furrows, one has more creases and folds than the other. English Bulldogs are more furrowed overall, with plenty of rolls on their body.

French Bulldogs have a tighter skin, or at least compared with English Bulldogs. They have folds on their faces but only a teeny tiny bit and are found only between the eyes, nose, and above the muzzle.

6. Intelligence

One thing to note about these bulldog breeds – they don’t belong in the top 100 most intelligent pups. This was, at least, based on canine psychology professor Stanley Cohen, who also wrote a book on dog intelligence.

Frenchies are, however, ranked 58th with a fair degree of obedience or working intelligence. The English Bulldog trails far behind at 77th with the lowest degree of intelligence for obedience or working category.

5. Temperament: Ease Of Training

There is no doubt that both breeds are trainable pups, yet one is easier to train. In this case, Frenchies are easier to train because of their higher intelligence level, although they can be stubborn, too. Consistency is a must to teach these pups and get them to learn from you.

English Bulldogs are some of the sweetest dogs out there… But they are also among the most stubborn and one of the laziest! Training them can be tricky, so they are better off with an experienced owner.

4. Temperament: Laid Back

Frenchies and English Bulldogs lend an air of being cool, calm, and collected. But if you prefer a more laid-back and relaxed pooch, the English Bulldog reigns in this category.

Frenchies are fun-loving fellas that simply thrive when placed at the center of attention. They love to have fun and can get into a bit of mischief sometimes, too! But often, all of these lead to plenty of chuckles along the way.

3. Lifespan

Both breeds are predisposed to a number of ailments, including skin allergies, yeast infections, and breathing issues. Frenchies often succumb to ear infections because of their ear’s unique structure, while English Bulldogs tend to have head tremors.

When it comes to their lifespan, French Bulldogs live a bit longer – about a decade or so – when treated well. As for English Bulldogs, they live between 8 and 10 years.

2. Popularity

With their unique appearance, adorable rolls, and large puppy dog eyes, both the French Bulldog and English Bulldog are popular pooches. They almost never leave the Top 10 every year, at least based on the AKC list.

In 2020, the French Bulldog is the 4th most popular dog, while the English Bulldog sits comfortably in 5th place. But English Bulldogs have had more years of fame since 2008, and Frenchies are more like new kids on the block in the popularity game.

1. Price

As Frenchies became more popular in the past decade, the price for these pups also skyrocketed over the years. The average cost of owning a French Bulldog is at $1,800, while English Bulldogs start at about $1,500.

These are only the basic costs of getting these breeds. The price hikes up even further when you opt for either breed with an award-winning lineage!

Can You Breed An English Bulldog With A French Bulldog? Yes, it is absolutely possible. When you breed these two dogs, you get yourself a hybrid. As a result, you can get the best of both worlds in terms of appearance and personality.

Do Frenchies And Bulldogs Get Along? English Bulldogs do get along with French Bulldogs, despite their intimidating appearance. By nature, these two breeds are warm and loving, although Frenchies are more sociable and English Bulldogs are a bit more reserved. But with early training and socialization, there is no doubt that these two pups can get along just fine.

Should I Get A French Bulldog Or An English Bulldog? There is no one better dog between the two, as they have different personalities that add to their appeal. But if you prefer a more active and comical pup, the French Bulldog is for you. As for a calmer and more laid-back pooch, there’s the English Bulldog.
