As you may guess from its name, the Antebellum Bulldog originates in the American South. Plantation workers bred these dogs as working Bulldogs during the Antebellum Period in the 19th century. They are from the Altamaha River Basin in Georgia, so theyโre also known as โAltamaha Plantation Dogs.โ These Bulldogs are known for hunting skills and intelligence, but there is more to this dog.
Ray Altman, an American from Georgia, longed for a dog breed similar to theย English Bulldogย but with fewer health problems. So, Altman developed the Altman White English Bulldog by crossing White English Bulldogs with English Bulldogs. The resultant breed is gentle in temperament and less prone to the severe health issues brought about by the more pronounced brachycephalic characteristic common in Bulldogs.
The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog is a little-known dog breed with origins that can be traced back to Old English Bulldogs. Primarily designed to herd cattle and drive hogs, the Alapaha Bulldogโs functions have evolved, and this pooch is now used mainly for protection and as a companion dog.
